Bishop of Trenton diocese was treated for cancer – part of nose replaced

Bishop David O’Connell

Bishop David O’Connell revealed Thursday that he was treated for – and has been in recovery from – skin cancer.

The Bishop made this revelation in the course of an anti-abortion statement he posted on the Diocese of Trenton’s website.

“What started out as a small skin cancer, became more aggressive, apparently due to my neglect,” Bishop O’Connell said.

He did not indicate when this all took place. But it seems to have been after the amputation of his leg last year due to diabetes.

The Bishop indicated that the cancer has since been fully removed.

“The right side of my nose was removed and reconstructed at Fox Chase Cancer Center,” he wrote. “‘We got it all,’ were the only words I wanted to hear. And, thank God, that’s what they said.”
